Naruto gave a soft sigh as he walked towards the Akatsuki base, transformed into a different ninja.

He was a bit shorter in this new ninja form, with dark red hair that he wore a bit like Sasuke's, and bright green eyes. He wore a black ANBU-ish shirt, with black pants to match, and a grey vest over top.

As he walked, each step closer made him feel even more fear and gloom - there was truly no turning back now.

A few minutes later, he approached a giant rock, which he guessed to be the entrance to the base.

"Here goes nothing...." He uttered silently. "HEY! OUT HERE! I KNOW THAT THIS IS THE AKATSUKI BASE! OPEN UP!!" He shouted.

"Yes, it IS the Akatsuki base." A soft, feminine voice said from behind Naruto.

Naruto spun around, and gasped when he saw half of a woman floating in the air, with an uncountable number of pieces of paper flying around, forming her lower half. "Hey, you're a real Akatsuki member!" He said, smiling. "I'm here to join your group."

Konan raised an eyebrow. "You think that it's that easy to join Akatsuki....? Just ask, and you're in? Well, it doesn't work that way, kid. There are numerous tests that you must take in order to join us - and even if you make it in, there's not a 100% chance that you'll make it past day one...."

"I don't care! Bring on whatever tests you may have!" Naruto said, grinning.

".....Interesting, you're rather fiesty.....we had a member like that only a few years ago, and he got himself blown to kingdom come." Konan said, placing her hand on the rock to enter the base. As she did so, it lifted just enough for Naruto and herself to squeeze in.

A venus fly-trap-headed man looked over at the entrance, and frowned. "Ahh, is this a person we're gunna use to replace our deceased members?" (Remember, like a bunch of chapters ago, Naruto killed like two members in 30 seconds....read back if you forgot.) Zetsu muttered. "YES, IT WOULD SEEM TO BE THAT WAY."

Konan nodded. "Yeah, this kid wants to join us." She said, pointing to Naruto, who waved awkwardly.

"...WHAT'S YOUR NAME?" Zetsu asked (all caps is black half, just in case you don't know)

Naruto froze up for a split second in thought. SH*T! I DIDN'T COME UP WITH A NAME!!! THINK, NARUTO, THINK....UM... "...My name is Natsu."

Zetsu nodded slowly. "Natsu, you say? Interesting name...WELL THEN, NATSU, LET'S BEGIN YOUR TESTS."

Natsu (even if i say Natsu, it means Naruto - I'll say he's Natsu just so that you remember that he's transformed.) nodded. "Right. What's test one?"

Konan shifted her position, and paper flew out of her sleeves. "You must fight me."

"HUH?!" Natsu asked, shivering.

(in Konoha, in the deserted place where the three guards were killed)

The figure sighed, turned, and stepped over into the darkness, following along the path that he had used to kill people for so long. After walking it's length, he stepped out into the light, revealing what he looked like.

He stood only 5' 7", and wore a suit similar to Zuko from Avatar (in the final episodes). His hair was a light purple, with a dark purple bang that went down the front of his face, to his chin. He looked up to the sky, and opened his eyes - which were a spooky dark blue, with no pupils.

This man...was Obscura Magus.

(in the hotel that everyone else is staying at)

Sakura sighed as she watched everyone get packed up to leave. She tried not to show it, but she was really worried about Naruto. "Okay guys, are we ready to look for the final Elemental?"

Ukita (the air elemental, again, in case you forgot) nodded, and ran next to Sakura. "YEAH, LET'S GO!!!" He said, running outside of the room.

Sakura smiled lightly - this kid reminded her of Naruto a little bit. "Well, he's ready, at least..."

Sasuke frowned at Sakura. "Heh, you're worried about Naruto, aren't you?" He asked, fingering his sword hilt.

"I can't help but be worried about him." Sakura said. "I mean, even though I love Naruto...I know how much of an idiot he can be. Knowing him, he probably forgot to come up with a couple of essential things for joining Akatsuki."

"....Like what?"

"A name and jutsus to use besides the Kage Bunshins and Rasengan."

"Oh, come on....Naruto's stupid, but I know he isn't THAT stupid..." Sasuke said, looking away for a moment. After an awkward moment of silence and thought, both him and Sakura said "Wait, yeah, he IS that stupid." at the exact same time.

(with Naruto)

Coincidentally, they said "he is that stupid" right as Natsu made several shadow clones and stared making rasengans.

Konan raised an eyebrow. "Interesting attacks....They remind me of a target we failed to aquire..."

Natsu grinned. "Heh! Who, the Kyuubi kid? I studied Uzumaki Naruto for years - and developed a fighting style similar to his, in case I ever had to fight him once joining Akatsuki!" Whew, got through that one....

"Really." Konan said, grinning. She twitched her finger, and surrounded Natsu in paper. She twitched her finger again, and hit a pressure point on the human body....

...that deactivates transformation.

Naruto was back to normal.

Trapped inside the Akatsuki base, with one major problem...

Konan tapped her ring, and it opened up. "Pein. We have Uzumaki."

"I can see that..." A dark voice said in the distance. Pein walked out of a dark corner, along with five other bodies. "Welcome to our base, Naruto."

"..!!!" Naruto gasped.

"Welcome to our base, Uzumaki." Pein said, gripping Naruto's throat and motioning for Konan to tighten her grip.

"GACK! URGH..." Naruto spat, unable to break free. His eyes darted around, and he managed to groan as he ran out of air, and fainted.

(a couple hours later)

Naruto's eyes fluttered open, and he sat with his back to a wall. What the-? Where am I? He wondered, standing up and looking around.

He was in a dark part of the Akatsuki base, that had pretty much no decorations, markings, or anything around him. In fact, it seemed like he was just in a cave (ironically, that's where the Akatsuki base is). He glanced upward, and saw that there were what appeared to be claw marks on the roof of the cave section he was in. Claw marks...? He thought, blinking a couple of times.

"Hey, is anyone here...?" Naruto whispered, not realizing that he was alone in the room. Damn it! It's too dark to see anything! He thought, putting his hands together.

"Suiton - Enlighted - !!" He began, but he felt an electric shock flow through his veins as he tried to initiate the jutsu. "AHRRHGHHH!!!!" He roared, falling over backwards.

"Nice try, Naruto." A voice said from all around Naruto.

Naruto shook, and stood up. "WHO THE HECK ARE YOU?!" He shouted, trying to find the source of the voice.

"It is still I, Pein." Pein said, voice echoing through the small cavern that Naruto was stuck in. "You have bothered me for the last time, Uzumaki....now you're going to die, and then...you'll be a part of Pein. I'm going to leave you here to hunger, to thirst, to suffocate, to die."

Naruto's eyes widened in surprise - this was bad. REALLY bad.

"Poor little child...If you had only decided to stay with your little friends, instead of going after us..." Pein's voice whispered..

...and then there was slience.

"Become a part of Pein....?" Naruto asked himself, trying to remember everything that he had learned about Pein. He uses those chakra receptors to control people...Is he going to use...MY body?! He thought, gasping. "No way...."

Naruto stared up at the ceiling again, and frowned at the claw marks. That's strange....The ceiling is easily 50 feet up there...The only way to jump that high and claw at the ceiling is to use chakra, but when I tried, I got shocked! He thought, trying to get chakra to his feet, but only getting shocked again. Strange....Maybe I need the Kyuubi's chakra...? He thought, closing his eyes.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you." A soft voice said from the corner of the cavern.

"....?! Who are you...??" Naruto asked, glaring in the direction of the voice.

"A figment of your imagination." The voice said.

"...?"

(elsewhere, with Sakura and Sasuke's team)

Sakura stared at the ever-darkening sky, and had a frown of concern on her face. "Naruto...." She whispered.

Sasuke glanced at Sakura, and sighed. "Look. Naruto's gunna be fine." He said, raising an eyebrow. "He may be an idiot, a screw-up, and a hothead, but he can still get himself out of any trouble he may get in."

"I know...." Sakura said, with a sigh. "I'm just...so worried about him...I lost him for three years, and I don't think I could stand to lost him again."

Gaara frowned. Not good... "Guys. Before Naruto left, I put a dot of sand on him as a tracking device. Now -"

"Let me guess, you can't find him?" Sakura asked.

"No, I know where he is! ...Problem is, he's...uhm...350 feet under the ground, and from his vital signs...He won't last long." Gaara said. "From here, we need to make a choice...Go back and get Naruto? Or..."

"Or what?" Sakura asked.

"Or let Akatsuki get the last elemental....because they've already left the base." Gaara said.

"...!!!!"

here comes chapter 16

"What...? Naruto...or the Elemental...?" Sakura whispered, staring at Gaara. "Why can't we just split up?"

Gaara sighed, and rubbed in forehead. "Well, it's mainly because of me. I have a sand tracker on Pein - one that I placed on him earlier when we fought. Thus, I know where they both are. Problem is, I'm the only one who can dig Naruto out of the ground, and I can't exactly fill you guys in on Pein's location."

"Why not?" Sasuke asked, scowling. "Come on, you can tell us where he is!"

"I don't know his actual location! My tracker merely tells me how far away the person is, and he's currently easily 16 miles away, meaning that it would take a lot of calculation to figure out where you can catch up with him, especially since you don't know much about our location." Gaara explained.

"You lost me." Neji said, raising an eyebrow.

"Basically, I can sense how far away he is, but, unlike your Byakugan, I can't see the area surrounding them. I have no clue WHERE they are - just how far away, and in which direction." Gaara said.

"I understood that, but why can't you just tell me what direction to look in?" Neji asked, grinning. "I can calculate that stuff in my head like it's nothing."

Gaara grinned in reponse, and pointed in Pein's direction. "16 miles that way, moving at average walking speed. Obviously, they aren't in a hurry."

"Understood. Sakura, I presume you'll be going with Gaara?" Neji asked, turning to leave.

"Yeah." Sakura replied, smiling. "We'll catch up with you later."

Neji nodded, and led the others in the direction that Gaara indicated.

"Let's move!" Gaara said, making a sand platform and flying off.

(with Naruto)

Naruto stared at the dark area where he heard the voice, and frowned. "Figment of my imagination? What's that supposed to mean?" He asked, grabbing a kunai out of his weapons pocket.

"It means that I dont' actually exist." The person said. "I thought that that was sort of obvious."

Naruto groaned in confusion. "Auuughhh, I'm losing my miiiiind..." He muttered.

"No, you just need help. That's why I'm here."

Naruto stared at the other person, and frowned when he realized it was Itachi. "...Itachi...? I thought you were sealed inside my mind, like the Kyuubi..." He muttered.

"I was, and I still am. Right now, you need my help, so I'm in physical form." Itachi said, smiling.

"What, you're gunna help me get of here?" Naruto asked, grinning. "Sweet! How do I get out?!" He asked.

"....There is no way out." Itachi replied.

"HUH??? THEN HOW ARE YOU GOING TO HELP ME?!" Naruto asked, growling.

Itachi smiled, and stared upwards. "Here's how I can help you - I need you to sit down. Take a deep breath. And then....enter sage mode." He said, closing his eyes.

"What? How will sage mode help me?" Naruto asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, in sage mode, you use the energy around you for extra power - but, if you use the energy around you for extra air, then you'll survive long enough for your friends to come save you." Itachi said.

"....Uhh, problem.....My friends are all out looking for the last elemental. They probably don't even know that I'm trapped in here." Naruto said, sitting still for a moment, and entering sage mode.

"Even though you don't think that your friends are coming, you're still following my advice?" Itachi asked.

Naruto nodded, and looked upwards. "I can't use this energy to use any jutsu, so I know that I can't escape, but...I dunno...I guess what you said gave me a bit of hope." Naruto said, smiling. "And that's all I need to make it through any situation."

Itachi smiled lightly in responce. "Hope...that's an important thing." He said, looking away. "All of my life, after betraying Konoha, I joined Akatsuki and lived my life with the hope that one day, Sasuke could kill me. Before you call me crazy, I just...had this IMAGE...of Sasuke ending up becoming a hero in Konoha. And there's nothing better than being a hero in your home village...But I never expected him to leave Konoha. Even so, I still believe that, by killing me, it lead him on the right path to become a hero."

"...How?"

"He rejoined you guys, didn't he? That's because he no longer needed to kill me. He didn't need to care about becoming stronger than anyone - he already was stronger than the man he hated the most. And the power didn't corrupt him." Itachi explained. "Naruto, you and I are alike in the way that we both consider Sasuke to be a brother. He was always mine, and then you and him got close enough to probably be brothers. He's a huge part of both of our lives. Please, don't let him get corrupted."

Naruto smiled. "Don't worry, Itachi! He won't be!" He said, ear twitching. "Whoa...I can sense something..." He muttered. "Footsteps on the ground I'm using for energy..."

"Your friends?" Itachi asked, black eye turning an odd shade of orange for less than a second.

"Yeah, I think so...!" Naruto said, grinning and standing up as a grain of sand appeared, and then a massive cylinder of rock was suddenly condensed into sand, letting light pour into the dark cavern that Naruto was stuck in. "GUYS! YOU'RE HERE! ITACHI, YOU WERE RIGHT, THEY DID CO-" He said, turning.

Itachi was gone.

".....?"

"NARUTO, GET UP HERE!" Sakura shouted, a huge smile on her face.

Naruto frowned at the area that Itachi was, and then leaped up to Sakura, who gave him a bear-hug when he came up.

Gaara looked down the hole that he made, and could have sworn he saw a flicker of movement at the bottom. "...?"

Without a second thought, Gaara turned, and started leading the way for Naruto and Sakura towards the others.

While at the bottom of the hole, the flicker of movement was a bunch of paper, that was changing from Itachi...

...into Konan.

Konan stared up, and smiled lightly, brushing her blue hair out of her face. Naruto Uzumaki....It was nice talking to you, even if I was under a disguise...Pein will probably kill me, but I couldn't let you die. I just couldn't. She thought, turning blowing away in a bunch of sheets of paper.

(with Neji's team)

Sasuke dashed ahead of Neji, and scowled. "WAIT! EVERYONE STOP!" He shouted, skidding forward and pulling out two Demon Wind Shuriken, both spinning with a loud shriek in his hands. "IT'S A TRAP!" He added, throwing the shurikens at two trees, both of which gave out loud screams, and turned into a couple of Akatsuki spies.

Neji frowned, and stared at Sasuke as he turned around. Wait...his eyes are black...How could he tell that there were spies there? He thought, as Suigetsu stepped towards the dead spies.

".....!! SUIGETSU, NO!" Neji shouted, dashing ahead and pushing Suigetsu away as the spies suddenly came back and threw the shuriken at Neji. Neji glanced upwards, shifted his weight, and then leaped upwards, spinning as he did so, chakra spinning around to protect him. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH SASUKE?!" He shouted, spinning around to face Sasuke, who had Ukita in a strangehold, chidori to the kid's head.

"Heh heh heh...Don't move, Neji, or I'll shoot my chidori through his head!" Sasuke said, body flickering and turning into a man wearing an Akatsuki hoodie.

"...!!"
