A Simple RPG Guide For Beginners

Role playing games are a fun way to express your creativity. They can be computer games, board games, play station…x box…you name it. Here in the Konoha Fanworks section writers come together and create a fan based rpg for others to enjoy.

I’ve had along history with written RPGs (Buffy, LOTR, UO, Angel, WOW, Endless Naruto are just a few) so I figured it would be helpful to people who are new if someone explained a few RPG basics and left forum for questions. It can be confusing when you first start and people can feel a bit lost.

Step One

Which RP to join?

There are several different RPGs here on Endless. Each one has a different style for example

Suki: *falls on couch* Training took forever today!
Ayame: *throws pillow at Suki* You’re just lazy.
Suki: *sticks out tongue* Am not!

Or

Akio leapt from tree to tree, wind rushing through his hair. There were no leaves on the frost bitten trees and the night was cold. Will I ever make it on time?! He thought to himself.

“You’re late.”

Sliding to a halt Akio looked down. Hikaru was below him eating…eating his bowl of hot ramen!! Akio jumped down from the tree branch eyes filled with rage.

“Don’t give me that look. I told you I’d eat it if you were late.” Hikaru smirked and slurped up the rest of the hot meal.


After you’ve figured out which style is yours…you can even make a new one if you want move on to step two.

Step 2

Character Creation

Alright so now you’ve chosen your RPG or perhaps created a new one…there’s just one problem, you don’t have a character…*gasp*

Your character can be anyone in the Endless universe, so some one from Bleach like Ichigo or Anko from Naruto. Also you can make your own character.

Example template from a UO Character I created a looooooong time ago:

Name: Lindor Welgarthe
Gender: Male
Age: Unknown
Race: Elf
Subrace: Unknown, but noticeably shorter than other elves.
Eye color: Ocean blue
Hair Color: Black
Skin color: Pale
Personality: Likes to joke, is very fond of women, loves food and fine elven wine.
Clothing: Cloaked, can’t tell what else he may be wearing.
Weapon: Sword, dagger.

If you can’t find a picture use something descriptive like the method above, it gives others a mental image of the character. Do a back history of the character, where they came from what they are like.

Example:

Lindor came from a Valley relatively unknown to most other elves in Sosaria. He wanted to see more of the world so when he and his wife Lindale married they set to adventure the land as traveling entertainers commonly known as Bards. Later they would for a much larger group called the Song Birds. Sing songs and treasure hunting was what they did while adventuring. Unfortunately a betrayal by one of their own, a drowess named Inthuulniar caused Lindale her life as well as the lives of nearly all the Song Birds. Too ashamed to return home Lindor has lived his life wandering rather aimlessly but has found new friends to help fill the void.

Step 3

Beginning your tale is probably one of the hardest areas to start. Make an introduction and leave an opening for others to interact with your character. Depending on which style of rpg you go with begin interacting with the other characters right away.

Example 1:

Rock Lee: *enters room making nice guy pose* Sakura-chan my one and only! I have come seeking your hand in marriage! *love gushing from eyes*

Sakura:*eyes widen a shocked expression on her face* Do I know you?

Rock Lee: Do not play coy! I am the leader of the Sakura Forever fan club! *eyes sparkling* Your number one fan! *thumbs up*

Sakura: *backs away slowly* You know I already have a number one fan…

Rock Lee: What?! *falls over*

Sakura: Yeah….*laughs nervously* His name is Neji the Modkage. He’s over there…*points*

Rock Lee: *jaw drops* He is my opponent? No matter he will lose and I will win your heart. Neji the Modkage I challenge you!!!

Neji the Modkage: ??????????

Example 2:

There were people fighting down below. Ioreth counted them on her fingers. The good guys seemed to be losing. The dwarf leaped from her hiding spot with a war cry and her axe in hand. The Orc below looked up just as the axe cleaved his head in half.

When the scrimmage was over Ioreth turned to the group of humans. “Ye tall’uns sure don’ know how ta pick yer battles do ye?”

The priest smiled down on her. “Thank you my stout friend. We will think better of it next time. Perhaps ale can repay you for your aid?”

“Aye lad, ale solves all troubles ye ken.” Swinging her axe back over her shoulder the group headed to the in over the hill. “What is tall folk like yer selves doin out here anyway?”




General RPG Rules

There’s a code of conduct most rpers follow, basically its respecting each other and others characters and staying true to the storyline.

1) No character is all powerful even if it is a god.
2) No playing another’s character if that person seems overly absent unless you have permission to do so.
3) Sometimes your character must get hurt.
4) Keep it as clean as possible there are younger viewers
5) Be respectful of other players and their characters
6) Have fun.
